Christmas Eve Lanterns

h1 December 28th, 2007

Every Christmas Eve, an entire neighborhood near the corner of Hall and Breton (In Grand Rapids, Michigan) puts paper lanterns along the road in front of their houses. People drive their cars (many with headlights off) through the winding roads to enjoy the sight.

I don’t know when this tradition started, but my mother-in -law says she remembers putting out the lanterns when she was a kid. If anyone can provide any more information about this beautiful tradition, please let me know.

  1. Don’t know about the tradition, but the video is beautiful. Nice pick on the audio track too, what is it?

  2. That’s actually in the city of East Grand Rapids. I make that observation because any neighborhood in the city can do those if they want. The city will deliver the bags, the sand/litter/whatever and the candles to anyone who requests them (within the city of East G.R.). You still have to pay for them of course, but that’s how they make sure they all look the same.

Their called “luminaries” when you put them along the street like this. Who knew? (Not me, until I moved here)
